Reading Notes: Marriage Tales, Part A

The Fox-Woman by Stith Thompson (1929)

A single hunter often went away to hunt, and when he would come back home, his house would be cleaned and everything would be put in order as if he had a wife. One day, he decided to pretend to leave, and hid so he would be able to see who entered his house while he left. He saw a fox enter his home. He thought the fox had entered to steal some food, so he followed it inside. To his surprise, he saw a beautiful naked woman. When the man asked if it had been her who was entering his home, she confirmed and stated that she was his wife. After living together for a short time, the husband had noticed a musky smell, and when he brought it up the woman said that it was her. She told him that if he was bothered by it, she would leave. She morphed back into a fox and never visited another man again.
